2000-2001
Graduate Program Committee Annual Report

The Graduate Program Committee of the College of Letters and Science held four meetings during the academic year to carry out its functions as authorized by the Rules Governing the Letters and Science Faculty Chapter 2.12.

Legislative Recommendations

The following recommendations were forwarded to the Dean for his action or referral to the Faculty:
  1. approval of the proposed modifications in the original proposal (May 5, 2000) regarding amendments to the Geography Ph.D.

  2. approval of the proposed changes to the Admission Requirements for the Master's and Doctoral Programs in Physics.

  3. approval of the proposed changes to the MS in Urban Studies.

  4. approval of the proposed change to the MA in History/Public History Specialization.

  5. approval of the proposed changes to the Graduate Certificate in International Technical Communication.

  6. approval of the proposed amendments to the requirements for the PhD in Political Science.

  7. approval of the changes in the Mediation and Negotiation Certificate.

  8. approval of the changes in the MHRLR requirements.

  9. approval of the History Ph.D. Implementation Plan with three revisions: (1) strengthen the financial section; (2) use the section on new faculty to make an argument for more RA support; and (3) address the key issue of student support.

Policy Issues

The Committee agreed that a department/program would not have to have a member present at the GPC meeting when changes to that unit's program are considered. As a matter of policy, however, departments are urged to have someone at the meeting.

The Committee agreed that the Committee's role in considering Graduate Student Recruitment is to keep the matter in front of the Graduate School.

Procedural Issues

Committee members agreed that the first meeting of the spring semester should not occur until after the start of spring classes.

David Heathcote was elected unanimously as Committee Chair for the 2000-2001 academic year.

Kristine Ruggiero was elected unanimously as Committee Co-Chair for the 2000-2001 academic year.

The Committee agreed to a trial review period for proposals on-line to determine if paper copy distribution could be eliminated.

The Committee agreed that enrollment data should be added to the Master's Program Survey report before the report is sent to department chairs.

Robert Jeske was elected unanimously as Committee Chair for 2001-2002.

Other Business

Dean Goodman discussed four issues with the Committee:
  1. Graduate Student Stipends.
  2. Graduate Student Recruitment.
  3. Potential Growth Areas for Programs in the College.
  4. Tuition-Generating Master's Programs.
The current state of affairs regarding NRTRs was discussed. Committee members were given suggestions for bringing about changes in the NRTR legislation at the State level.

The annual report for 1999-2000 was approved.
