Course and Curriculum Committee Annual Report


Meetings

The Course and Curriculum Committee of the College of Letters and Science held twelve meetings during the academic year to carry out its functions as authorized by Letters and Science document #168.

Legislative Recommendations

The following recommendations were forwarded to the Dean for his action or referral to the Faculty:
  1. Approve adding a capstone requirement for Comparative Study of Religion.
  2. Approve adding global studies courses to the minor in History.
  3. Approve adding global studies courses to the major in History and allow the senior thesis to count as the capstone requirement.
  4. Approve the revised list of electives in the International Studies major.
  5. Approve allowing post-baccalaureate students to earn the certificate in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies.
  6. Approve changing the name of the curricular area code to agree with the certificate program name for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Certificate Program.
  7. Approve allowing both semesters of Business and Legal Spanish to count in the major, Hispanic Language and Culture option, for Spanish.
  8. Approve title change for Latin American Studies Certificate Program to Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and the program is open to post-baccalaureate students.
  9. Approve new Certificate Program in Digital Arts and Culture.
  10. Approve amending the electives list for the major in Conservation and Environmental Science.
  11. Approve revising Option A of the English major.
  12. Approve revision of the Spanish minor.
  13. Approve revision of the Great Books Certificate requirements.
  14. Approve revision of the English major.
  15. Approve establishment of three Forensic Science Certificates.
  16. Approve the following new French courses: 190, Elementary French Electives; 197, Study Abroad; 428, Castles, Cathedrals and Common People: the Foundations of French Culture; 433, Topics in French Literature.
  17. Approve change in requirements for the Anthropology major.
  18. Approve Biochemistry Major Implementation Plan.
  19. Approve change in requirements for the Sociology major.
  20. Approve a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Women's Studies.
  21. Approve change in Spanish Capstone and Honors in the Major requirements.
  22. Approve revision of requirements for Major in French.
  23. Approve reinstatement of Curricular Area Code 522 for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
  24. Approve the BAGS Implementation Plan.
  25. Approve revision of the History Department's requirements for the Concentrated Study in Two Department.
  26. Approve the Celtic Studies Certificate Program.
  27. Approve capstone requirement in the Sociology major.
  28. Approve change in admission requirements for the JMC major and minor.
  29. Approve adding a capstone experience to the International Studies major.
  30. Approve adding a capstone experience with option of an internship to complete the capstone requirement to the Africology major.
  31. Approve adding a capstone experience to the German major.
  32. Approve adding a capstone experience to the Classics major.
  33. Approve adding a capstone experience to the Linguistics major.
  34. Approve adding a capstone experience to the Hebrew Studies major.
  35. Approve adding a capstone experience to the Russian major.
  36. Approve adding a capstone experience to the Philosophy major.
  37. Approve adding a capstone experience to the Art History and Criticism major.
  38. Approve opening the Latino Studies Certificate to post-baccalaureate students.
  39. Approve adding a capstone experience to the Mathematical Sciences majors.
  40. Approve adding a capstone experience to the Geosciences major.
  41. Approve adding a capstone experience to the Conservation and Environmental Science major.
  42. Approve a proposal to eliminate the W-I requirement.
  43. Approve a request for an entitlement to plan a major in Actuarial Science.

  1. Jeffrey Merrick was elected chair and James Coggins was elected co-chair.
  2. Sub-committee chairs were elected: Campbell Tatham for HU; Bettina Arnold for SS; Vince Cronin for NS.
  3. Appointments to the W-I Subcommittee were: Charles Schuster (Committee Liaison); Mike Allen (Humanities); Jeff Merrick (Social Sciences).
  4. The 1999-2000 Annual Report was approved as submitted.
  5. Committee actions listed in the 2000 Summer Report were approved and are included in the course summaries of this report.
