It was recommended that a replacement for Cam Tatham be appointed for the spring semester. Connie Jo will identify the next eligible candidate from the most recent election(s).
    2. Review of L&S Degree Requirements Implemented in Fall, 1996 - The Committee agreed to set up a sub-committee to review the L&S requirements. Mike Allen, Vince Cronin, Connie Jo, and Charles Schuster will develop a plan for how the review should be conducted.

  6. Old Business
    1. On-line Learning (Regents' Doc. 8404)
    2. Mike Allen reported the data he received from departments. In summary, the departments, except Mathematical Sciences, feel they do not have adequate resources to address what appears to be the Regents' concern. The members of the Committee agreed that the summary report should be shared with the dean. The Committee will ask him to request that departments articulate their expectations of students' on-line learning experience/skills at the time of graduation and identify the short- and long-term resources needed so that students can meet those expectations. The Committee expressed its gratitude to Mike Allen for his work on this project.

  7. New Business
    1. Natural Sciences
      1. Proposal to Modify the Requirements of the Certificate Program in Forensic Sciences - view on web at http://www.des.uwm.edu/intranet/opc/viewform.cfm?FormID=316 - it was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Certificate Program in Forensic Sciences. The motion was approved unanimously.
    2. Social Sciences
      1. CAR Forms - It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR forms:
      2. History 448-150 Multicultural America (new - jointly-offered with English)
History 448-272 The Blues: History and Culture (new)
It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR Forms:
Anthro 156-156 Food and Culture (new)
Anthro 156-325 Japanese Culture and Society (new)
Committee members expressed some concern over the requirement of a term paper in Anthro 156. If this requirement is retained, the department should consider including in the prerequisites "completion of the GER English Composition competency req." Committee members also felt that the syllabus for Anthro 325, in contrast, did not outline the same amount of work as for the lower level course. There was concern that a large part of the grade rests on one multiple-choice exam. Charles Schuster agreed to contact the faculty member who proposed the courses concerning these issues. The courses are approved with the strong suggestion that the syllabi be amended.

It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following History course:
History 448-475 Careers in History (new)
After some discussion, Committee members agreed that career counseling within a major, while a valuable undertaking, should be done as a regular part of advising majors. It should not be a credit-generating activity. The motion failed.
      3. GER Requests - It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the following GER requests:
      4. Anthro 156-156 Food and Culture (GER-SS)
