  5. New Business

    3. Social Sciences
      1. The proposal to open the Ethnic Studies Certificate Program to post-baccalaureate students was moved and seconded. The motion was approved unanimously.

    4. Regents' Plan to Require Computer Literacy - Committee members discussed a position statement by the Board of Regents that indicated that all majors in the UW System should have content that ensures students gain exposure to on-line learning before they graduate. The College will be asked to certify that this is being done. Members reviewed a list of computers skills prepared at System. There was a discussion concerning whether on-line courses are applicable in certain departments. The Committee will send the criteria list to departments asking that they indicate if/how they currently address the criteria. They will be asked to indicate if computer skills are part of required or elective courses. They also will be asked if they currently have access to the necessary classrooms, staff, and adequate technical support to address the skills outlined by System. Departments should indicate what they need and should present any concerns. A narrative that explains what is behind the Committee's request will accompany the list. It will include some of the Committee's ideas about how to address the Regents' concern. The letter will request a response from departments by November 1, 2001. Committee members will address this issue at a future meeting.

    5. The Committee considered the three French courses added to the New Business agenda. Cam expressed his concern that French 145 and 421, which are retakable, did not state a limit to the number of credits a student could earn. The Committee approved these two requests contingent on the department's agreement to add a 9 cr limit.

Regarding French 528, Cam inquired whether or not Peoplesoft would allow instructors to waive a prerequisite if the wording "or cons instr" does not appear on the CAR form. Connie Jo stated waivers would continue to be accepted routinely. She noted that the FICL department sought the inclusion of the "consent" language to ensure student were aware of this option. The Committee approved French 528 as submitted.

  6. Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Connie Jo
