  1. The Chair, Jay Beder, called the meeting to order at 10:06 a.m. in Holton Hall 241.


  2. Automatic Approvals - none


  3. Automatic Consent

    1. Approval of Minutes #8 (February 15, 2002) - There were no objections to any of the automatic consent items; they stand approved.

  4. Procedural Matters
    1. Review of L&S Degree Requirements Implemented in Fall, 1996 - tabled
    2. Congratulations to Vince Cronin for winning the Martine Meyer Teaching Award

  5. Old Business
    1. Recommendation to Eliminate the Concentrated Study in Two Departments (or Curricular Areas) Option of the Major - The proposal to the L&S Faculty to recommend the elimination of the Concentrated Study in Two Departments (or Curricular Areas) option of the major was moved and seconded. Committee members agreed to add a statement indicating that students still had an option to design their own programs through the Committee Interdisciplinary Major.
    2. Articulation Agreements (Proposal by Mike Allen) - tabled

  6. New Business
    1. Humanities - It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the Dean approval of the following items:
      1. CAR Form
      2. Request to Approve Commun 245-641 Current Topics in Organizational Communication, "International Mediation" subtitle for the International Requirement
    2. Natural Sciences - none
    3. Social Sciences
      1. CAR Forms - the following items were tabled. The Committee requested clarification of the description in JMC 584-560, which is very similar to the JMC 101 description.
      2. JMC 584-560 History of Mass Media (new)
        JMC 584-570 History of Mass Communication: Print Media (delete)
        JMC 584-571 History of Mass Communication: Broadcast Media (delete)
    4. Question: Can students declare a certificate in the same area of concentration selected for their International Studies Major? - The Committee members determined that a general policy is not needed at this time. They expressed the view that students should be able to receive any academic credential for which they complete all requirements, even if the courses overlap to a large extent. It was suggested that International Studies and the certificate programs might wish to consider the possibility of adding a restriction on the number of credits that can overlap. This decision should be left to the individual programs.
