  3. Procedural Matters
    1. Does APC have a role in recommending a candidate for the Dean of the College of Letters and Science? - The Committee agreed that historically the Academic Policy Committee has played a role in the recommendation of a candidate for the Dean of Letters and Science.

  4. Old Business - None

  5. New Business
    1. After the candidates for dean were discussed in the context of the current state budget crisis, the following resolution was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously:

    2. Whereas, the functions of the L&S Academic Policy Committee include making recommendations to the L&S Faculty concerning program planning and budget matters; and

      Whereas, the Academic Policy Committee members are not convinced that the four finalists for position of Dean of the College of Letters and Science rise to the stature that warrants their appointment at this time, for want of experience and/or scholarship; and

      Whereas, the University and the College are entering a period of budgetary strain that will require an administration that can make timely and knowledgeable budgetary decisions; and

      Whereas, Dean Richard Meadows has assembled an effective working team whose efforts have been productive;

      Be it resolved that the APC urges the L&S Faculty to forward a resolution to the Provost recommending the following:
      • that the current search for a Dean of the College of Letters and Science be abandoned, and
      • that Dean Meadows be asked to continue in this position.

  6. The meeting was adjourned at 10:10 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Connie Jo
