    1. Policy on Appeals for Waiver of Degree Requirements
      Erland Olfe presented the issue of granting waivers of degree requirements for students with disabilities. He informed Committee members that he met with experts on the Americans with Disabilities Act. The College was advised that it is not necessary to waive or substitute courses for requirements that are fundamental to the degree. However, the College should have a policy that it applies uniformly. Members reviewed summaries of L&S Requirements from 1989 and 1998. It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the L&S Faculty adoption of a policy with the following provisions:
      • declare all of the requirements as fundamental to the degree;
      • prohibit alterations in English and Mathematical requirements, which are basic foundations for additional course work;
      • in extraordinary circumstances, permit alterations for the remaining requirements.

      The Committee agreed to have Jane Nardin and Connie Jo draft the policy statement and circulate it to the Committee members for their review.

    2. It was moved, seconded, and approved to move into closed session to consider a student appeal for waiver of the Mathematics requirement.

    3. Given the policy recommendation just approved by the Committee, the student's appeal was denied. If the L&S Faculty does not adopt the policy on appeals, the student's appeal can be reconsidered. The Committee strongly urged that the student get tutoring in Mathematics as recommended in the student's clinical evaluation.

  6. Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 2:38 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Connie Jo
