  4. Old Business
    1. Discussion of the Role of and Need for the Affirmative Action Advisory Committee – Connie Jo gave some background on the Committee's history and the discussions that occurred last year concerning the need for this committee to exist. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Faculty that the AAA Committee be eliminated. Eleanor Miller was asked to discuss her views about the possible role of the Committee. She mentioned the following things:
      • provide an oversight role to ensure that departments get data specific to their discipline concerning their success in attracting people of color and women;
      • oversee collection of data concerning complaints and their resolution within the College;
      • recommend ways to address retention issues;
      • undertake a review of the distribution of women and people of color across the faculty ranks in each department.
      There was discussion of the need for a broader mandate for the Committee if it is to have a meaningful role. It was moved, seconded, and approved that the motion be tabled. Members agreed that the Committee should look at department-specific data on hiring and should fulfill its charge by preparing a report for the Faculty.

  5. New Business - none

  6. Adjournment - Members agreed to meet on December 3, 2001 at 4:00 p.m. Eleanor Miller will try to circulate hiring data to Committee members before the meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 4:47 p.m.
