Minutes No. 1

  L&S Faculty
Doc. No.
  1. Call to Order - The Dean, Marshall Goodman, called the meeting to order at 3:33 p.m. in Bus N140.
    A. Announcements - There were no announcements.
    B. Question Period - Stacey Oliker asked Dean Goodman to report on the DIN selection process. Dean Goodman indicated that the College Administration still was reviewing proposals and the recommendations of the APC. The College's recommendations to the Provost are due on November 15. Mark Schwartz, Chair of the APC, explained that committee's process of recommending groups of proposals most likely to get DIN funding. Stacey indicated that she would be disappointed if all selections were made with the idea that only those proposals in the identified groups would determine the future directions of the College. Dean Goodman stated that he understood the APC's approach in wanting to go forward with themes in which we can show we have a lot of new ideas, but there also are some very important "outliers" among the proposals that are crucial to the College's missions. Mark Schwartz added that the Committee will be looking at the other proposals in the future for other purposes or types of funding.

  2. Automatic Consent Business - There were no objections to any of the automatic consent business. The following items are accepted:

  3. Old Business
    1. Attendance at L&S Faculty Meetings - Cam Tatham, Chair of the Committee on Comittees, reported that, in keeping with a proposal passed recently by the Faculty, he had written to departments asking that they assign responsibility for attending the faculty meeting to a specific individual. It appeared that most departments were represented at the meeting. There was no further discussion of this issue.

  4. New Business
    A.   Recommendation to Change the Title of the Certificate Program in Latin American Studies
It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to change this certificate program's title to "Latin American and Caribbean Studies."
    576
    B. Recommendation to Establish Three Forensic Sciences Certificates, Offered Jointly with Clinical Lab Sciences and Criminal Justice - It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to approve the forensic sciences certificates. 577
    C. Recommendation to Establish a Certificate Program in Digital Arts and Culture - It was moved and seconded to accept faculty document no. 577. Patrice Petro questioned the inclusion of the English Department's course in science fiction literature as an elective for the program, indicating that there were other similar courses also taught in English. Mia Consalvo responded that it was not so much the content of the course as the pedagogical practices of the instructor that made this course an appropriate choice. She indicated that other similar courses also could be accepted. 578
    D. Recommendation to Create a Uniform Departmental Grievance/Grade Appeal Procedure - It was moved and seconded to accept faculty document no. 578. Several faculty members expressed concerns that the document was not specific enough in outlining exactly what would happen at each step in the process. Others indicated that the policy should be general enough to encourage informal resolution. One member asked that the University representative be given deadlines for action at each step. It was noted that this could be a problem during the summer session. Another said the student should receive a copy of the chair's mediation report. One asked for clarification of "the action prompting the appeal or grievance;" did this refer to the incident or to the breakdown of informal avenues of resolution? It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommit this item to the Academic Policies and Appeals Committee. 579

  5. Adjournment - The meeting adjourned at 4:11 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Connie Jo
