College of Letters and Science Faculty Document No. 591 April 12, 2001 Recommendation of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Course and Curriculum Committee to Reinstate the 522 Curricular Area Code Recommendation That the Faculty approve the reinstatement of the 522 Curricular Area Code and rename it Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS). Rationale Until 1992, the 522 curricular area, then called Latin American Studies, was active. It was discontinued when years of budget cuts reduced the size of the faculty, making it difficult for departments to contribute faculty members to the L&S program to teach interdisciplinary courses. That situation has changed; there are many more faculty members currently in the College who have an interest in teaching interdisciplinary courses in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. The name change of the curricular area reflects changes in the Center's and Certificate Program's names to incorporate the culturally related area of the Caribbean.
