College of Letters and Science Faculty Document No. 585 April 12, 2001 Graduate Certificate Program in Translation Annual Report, 1999-2000 Enrollments At the start of its third year the program had 14 students. In the course of the year (through August 18, 1999), 10 qualifying exams were administered and 9 students were accepted into the program. Two more were accepted by portfolio. Of the 11 students admitted, 3 did not enter the program: 1 for financial reasons, another because the beginning translation class in German was canceled, the third because she was not admitted to MAFLL. Three students dropped out of the program in the course of the year, 2 due to job promotions, 1 because she wasn't doing well. Six students graduated in the spring and summer of 2000. The program entered its fourth year with 13 students: 9 in Spanish and 4 in French. 8 of the 13 are pursuing an MA as well as the Certificate. New Translation hire in Spanish The Department of Spanish and Portuguese hired Visiting Professor Susan Rascon as Assistant Professor of Spanish, effective in the fall of 2000. Professor Rascon, a published translator, will teach the Spanish translation classes. American Translators Association Annual Conference Four students accompanied Professors Velguth and Rascon to the ATA conference in St. Louis, MO, Nov. 3-6, 1999. MA exams, graduation and employment Students Maria Cristina Bernacchi (English>Italian), Kathleen Farrell (French>English), Josette Herriges and Eva Ehlert Tuinstra (German>English), Sandra Hofmann (Irish>English), and Stéphanie Roulon (English>French) successfully took comprehensive examinations for the MA. Ms. Herriges found employment with a local company doing business with Germany, Ms. Roulon with a spice import company in Chicago, Ms. Bernacchi, Ms. Tuinstra and Ms. Hofmann are doing free-lance translating while continuing to teach, and Ms. Farrell went to Penn State to pursue a PhD in Second Language Acquisition.
