Recommendation of the Committee on Committees to Reduce the Quorum for Meetings of the L&S Faculty

Recommendation:

That Chapter 1.02(4) of the College of Letters and Science Rules Governing the Faculty, approved October 23, 1975 as Faculty Doc. #200, be amended as follows:

(4) A quorum of a regular meeting is thirty twenty-five members of the faculty of the College as defined in 1.01(1).

Rationale:

For some time, attendance at L&S Faculty meetings has been low. While no one has challenged a quorum at meetings in the past several years, attendance at some of those meetings may have fallen short of the required thirty members of the faculty. Based on recent faculty action, each department now is asked to identify one faculty member to attend every meeting to represent the department's interests and to report back to the other faculty members. Since the college has twenty-one departments, cross-college representation can be achieved with fewer than thirty faculty members. The members of the Committee on Committees believe that the stated quorum should reflect the level of participation at which the L&S faculty is comfortable conducting its business.
