November 2, 2000 1999-2000 Annual Report The Certificate Program in Pre-Medical Studies has been active for approximately 1 1/2 years, and no student has yet been granted a certificate. Information on the certificate is available in the Undergraduate Catalogue, the Schedule of Classes, L&S Advising web page, and through the pre-professional advising office and the program coordinator. The program has 40 students enrolled as of Semester II, 1999-2000. The active interest in the program should continue based on the number (52) of incoming freshmen indicating an interest in pre-med studies this year. The Advisory Committee for the program met on October 6, 1999 to evaluate the current status of the program and to address pertinent issues impacting the program and on March 28, 2000 to discuss waivers and additional courses for the program. The MCAT exam preparatory course, offered at UWM in the 1999-2000 UWinteriM term, was reviewed by the committee. The committee recommended that the course be offered again during the 2000-2001 UWinteriM session. It was suggested that a section on verbal reasoning be included in future MCAT review courses. Because of the limited time in the UWinteriM term, however, the verbal reasoning section should be considered for the early spring semester. Required and possible alternative courses for the Certificate in Pre-medical Studies were evaluated. There was a committee consensus that waivers/substitutions would be considered on an individual basis for Anthropology 104, Philosophy 241, 243, or 244 (Ethics), Human Kinetics 211, History 299 and Natural Science Research requirements. Three course waivers were approved for these courses. Data will continue to be collected to assess the frequency of course waivers and information on these options will be noted in future literature about the Pre-med Certificate Program. The addition of any new courses to the certificate was deferred until there can be an evaluation of current courses by the committee. The credentials of a new instructor to teach Honors 310, "Introduction to Clinical Medicine for Premedical Students" in place of Dr. Greg Brotzman were reviewed. It was recommended that Janet Jesmok and L&S administration pursue hiring Dr. Paul Hunter for this course. Various activities were developed in collaboration with the L&S Pre-Med Advising Office and the Pre-Med Student Association. A listserv is being used to inform students about speakers, scholarships, career information and opportunities. Three physicians, Dr. M. Plotkin, Dr. K. Bizorgi, and Dr. G. Brotzman, gave presentations at UWM on the medical profession. The Certificate Program in Pre-Medical Studies continues to be an active program.
