International Studies Major Advisory Committee
1999-2000 Annual Report
- Professor Donald Pienkos (Political Science) was appointed faculty coordinator of the interdisciplinary International Studies Major in August 1999 by Dean Marshall Goodman. He followed Professor Mark Tessler (Political Science) in this responsibility.
- Ms. Anne Banda was appointed Senior Instructional Program Coordinator in December 1999, succeeding Dr. Jolene Jesse. Dr. Jesse served as interim coordinator from June 1999, following Mr. Ron Snyder. Among her responsibilities is the advising of majors and minors in the International Studies program.
- Doreen Festge, Program Assistant for the International Studies Major, continued in this capacity in working on behalf of the students in the program.
- At the close of the 1999-2000 academic year, 79 majors and 5 minors were enrolled in the International Studies program. Nine students graduated in International Studies in December 1999; 17 will graduate in May 2000. Between January and December 1999, 33 students declared majors in International Studies, 16 since September 1999.
- Three meetings of the Programs Subcommittee of the Center for International Education were convened in the 1999-2000 academic year. In addition to the subcommittee's responsibilities to the Center, the program's subcommittee serves as an advisory body to the International Studies Major. The subcommittee was very active in approving changes in the International Studies major and its list of course electives. The subcommittee supported the work of the Center for International Education in a number of ways. These included its members' (a) participation in the meetings of the Center for International Education Advisory Committee, (b) attendance at the Forum on Global Studies at UWM on December 15-16, 1999 and January 20, 2000, (c) involvement in the conference on Human Rights sponsored by the Center on April 28-29, 2000, and in other events sponsored by the Center and the International Studies Major. Committee members participated in the meetings aimed at developing a Global Studies curriculum under the direction of Associate Deans Richard Meadows and Rita Cheng.
- The Major sponsored or supported a series of student-targeted academic programs on the campus, including four lectures in classes taught by International Studies faculty members and two panel discussions for the university and public, one on the Middle East peace process, the second on Russia'' presidential election. All took place in Spring 2000.
- The International Studies program supported the activities of the International Studies Student Club on campus and organized get-togethers for students (March 2000) and faculty (November 1999). It took an active part in the October 1999 UWM Open House to inform incoming students about the International Studies Major. Ms. Banda visited area high schools in Spring 2000 and met with college undergraduate advisors about the International Studies Major.
- The International Studies office produced two newsletters for distribution to all majors, minors, student alumni in the Major, and faculty members teaching in the program.
- A comprehensive listing of all UWM faculty members teaching international studies courses was prepared for the first time and distributed. A total of 111 faculty members in 17 departments currently teach courses in the Internationals Studies program
- Pienkos, Banda, and Festge regularly attend the staff meetings of the Center for International Education and contribute to its programs.
