Affirmative Action Advisory Committee
1999-2000 Annual Report

The Affirmative Action Advisory Committee met three times during the 1999-2000 academic year. The meetings were held on November 12, December 17 and April 13.

November 12

The committee elected Daad Saffarini as chair. A discussion of the committee's charter and the scope of affirmative action resulted in the decision to amend the charter and define its mission. The terms of office of members was changed to three-year staggered terms to ensure sufficient continuity among the members to make the committee's work more productive. The committee agreed to invite Linda Daley, Erika Sander, and a representative from the Office of Diversity and Compliance to inform the committee of various aspects of affirmative action regulations and practices on the campus in order to improve carrying out their charge.

December 17

Joseph Rodriguez was elected chair of the committee after Daad Saffarini announced that she would no longer be able to serve as chair. Linda Daley, L&S Personnel Office, and Charmaine Clowney, Office of Diversity and Compliance, gave presentations to the committee, and the information was discussed.

April 13

The Committee on Committees recommended to the faculty that the Affirmative Action Advisory Committee membership term be changed to a three-year staggered term. The action was approved. A new Charter was distributed.

The Milwaukee Commitment document was discussed relative to improving the College's minority advising programs and attracting top students from Milwaukee area schools with predominately minority populations. The committee has several questions about the timetable for implementing the Commitment, steps that have already been taken, and which goals have been reached.

The committee decided to defer discussion of the role of the committee until after restructuring of the terms of membership.

Respectfully submitted,

Michael Gordon, History
Joseph Rodriguez, History, Chair
Daad Saffarini, Biological Sciences
Rachel Skalitzky, FICL
Gregory Squires, Sociology
