  3. Procedural Matters - None

The agenda was suspended to discuss the Certificate in Digital Arts and Culture in order to accommodate the Committee's guests.

Professors Mia Consalvo and Tasha Oren gave some background on the development of the program and responded to questions. Matters most of interest were the academic vs. technical content of the program and the concept of a digital culture. It was moved, seconded, and approved (with one abstention) to recommend approval of the Certificate Program to the Dean.

The committee returned to the agenda.

  4. Old Business
    1. Community Program in Jewish Studies - nothing to report
    2. Quality of Work Requirement in the Major - Report may be ready for Nov meeting.
    3. Concentrated Study in Two Departments (or Curricular Areas) - This matter was deferred until later in the meeting because Erl Olfe was not yet present.

  5. New Business
    1. Humanities
      1. CAR &/or GER Forms - The following requests were considered:
Italian 508-242 Topics in Italian American Studies: (Subtitle) (new/GER-HU)
        - It was moved, seconded, and approved (with one negative vote) to table this request to provide an opportunity for consultation with the English Department.
Spanish 912-225 Understanding the Hispanic World: (Subtitle) (new/GER-HU)
        - It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend this course and the GER-HU credit to the Dean.
    2. Natural Sciences - None
    3. Social Sciences
      1. Proposal for a Certificate Program in Digital Arts and Culture - See above for action on this matter.

Committee returned to a discussion of the Concentrated Study in Two Departments.

Connie Jo reviewed the Committee's prior consideration of a request to eliminate this major option from the L&S degree. She gave some background on the APCC's review of the program. Erl Olfe reported that it appeared that most students selecting the program were those who were having trouble meeting grade point average requirements in regular majors. The original purpose of the program, he said, was to serve students who only could attend at night. Data on the percent of students in the program who were night-only students were not immediately available. Very few students select the program, and it is likely that many of these could be accommodated in the Committee Interdisciplinary Major program.

It was moved, seconded, and approved (with one negative vote) to recommend to the L&S Faculty that the Concentrated Study in Two Departments (or Curricular Areas) be eliminated. Erl indicated that he would work on the proposal and rationale; Connie agreed to assist him.

  6. Adjournment - The meeting adjourned at 10:18 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Connie Jo
