  1. The chair, Jeffrey Merrick, called the meeting to order at 9:31 a.m. in Holton Hall 241.

  2. Automatic Consent
    1. Minutes #12 (May 10, 2000) were approved as submitted.
    2. The 1999-2000 Annual Report was approved as submitted.
    3. Committee actions listed in the 2000 Summer Report were affirmed.
    4. The following CAR forms were accepted as automatic consent business.

  3. Procedural Matters
    1. James Coggins was elected as the Co-Chair for 2000-2001.
    2. The following Subcommittee Chairs for 2000-2001 were elected:
      Humanities: Cam Tatham
      Social Sciences: Bettina Arnold
      Natural Sciences:     Vince Cronin
    3. The tentative meeting schedule for the Fall Semester was approved. The Committee will meet on Fridays, September 29, October 20, November 10, December 1, and December 22. The Spring meeting schedule will be set at a later meeting.
    4. The Committee's Review Procedures were discussed briefly for the information of new members.
    5. Two vacancies on the W-I Subcommittee were filled: Humanities - Mike Allen; Social Sciences - Jeff Merrick. Chuck Schuster will be asked to continue as the official Committee liaison.

  4. Old Business
    1. Community Program in Jewish Studies - nothing to report
    2. Quality of Work Requirement in the Major - nothing to report
    3. Adherence to GER Guidelines - The chair, Jeff Merrick, requested that the Committee affirm its intent to exercise stricter adherence to GER guidelines this year. He will communicate that information to department chairs in a memo very soon.

  5. New Business
    1. Natural Sciences - The following items were approved. Tom Holme was present to respond to questions concerning the new course, Chemistry 105.

    2. Social Sciences - The following items were approved; JMC 260 with one abstention. Fred Anapol was present to respond to questions concerning the new course, Anthropology 405. Connie Jo was asked to explain the "not retakable" statement in the JMC 260 course to the APCC.

    3. Humanities - The following items were approved, with two conditions. The Department of English has requested W-I credit for English 286. If the W-I subcommittee recommends approval of 286, the C&CC grants automatic approval to a CAR form making the required description changes. English 633 was approved on condition that the minutes reflect the Committee's view that "rhetoric" is not the exclusive province of the English Department. Julio Rodriguez-Luis was present to respond to questions about Spanish 310 and the Spanish minor.

    5. Concentrated Study in Two Departments (or Curricular Areas) - deferred until the next meeting.
    6. Commun 245-698 Internship in Communication (prereq) was removed from automatic consent and considered as a separate item because the Department proposed a modification of the submitted CAR form. The prerequisite language requiring that students be Communication majors or minors was to be removed and the following course prerequisites were to be substituted: Commun 101(P), 103(P), and 105(P). The course was approved with the stated modifications.
