It was moved, seconded, and approved to suspend the agenda to consider the matter of interest to the Committee's guest.
Item VI.C.6, a request for an entitlement to plan a major in actuarial science, was moved and seconded. Eric Key answered questions about the proposal. Connie Jo noted that the credits for Bus Adm 201, on the first page, needed to be corrected to read "3." With that correction, the motion was approved unanimously.
The Committee returned to the regular order of the agenda.
- Procedural Matters
- Election of Chair for 2001-2002 - Jay Beder was elected unanimously as committee chair for 2001-2002.
- Summer Approvals - It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to authorize the current or incoming chair to act on routine curricular matters on behalf of the committee over the summer.
- Old Business
- Community Program in Jewish Studies - nothing to report
- New Business
- Social Sciences
- It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to add a capstone experience to the international studies major.
- It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to add a capstone experience to the africology major. Connie Jo noted that an amendment to the proposal had been submitted. The Department of Africology wishes to add the option of an internship to complete the capstone requirement. The amendment was approved, and the motion was approved unanimously.
- Humanities
- CAR Forms
- Approval of Philos 736-335 Philosophy of Biology (new) was moved and seconded. Committee members expressed discomfort with the form of the description. The motion to recommend approval of Philos 335 was approved with the suggestion that the department consider rewording the description. Connie Jo will communicate that information to the department.
- It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the Dean approval of Philos 736-685 Capstone Senior Seminar: (Subtitle).
- It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to add a capstone experience to the philosophy major.
- It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to add a capstone experience to the art history and criticism major.
- It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to open the Latino studies certificate to post-baccalaureate students.
The following five proposals were moved and seconded as a group.
- Proposal to Add a Capstone Experience to the German Major
- Proposal to Add a Capstone Experience to the Classics Major
- Proposal to Add a Capstone Experience to the Linguistics Major
- Proposal to Add a Capstone Experience to the Hebrew Studies Major
- Proposal to Add a Capstone Experience to the Russian Major
Connie Jo presented an email message from the Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics, Garry Davis, in which he outlined a number of reasons why students generally do their study abroad experiences in their junior year and asking for approval to count junior year study abroad as the capstone experience. Committee members acknowledged that junior year study abroad is more common than a senior year overseas study. However, faculty legislation states that the capstone experience must occur in the senior year; the Committee does not believe it has the authority to alter that requirement. The FLL proposals provide several options for completing the capstone experience; therefore, students should not have difficulty meeting this requirement without counting junior-year study abroad. Those students who engage in a study abroad experience in the senior year may use that experience to meet the capstone requirement. Committee members noted that the department's proposal states that the capstone experience must be taken in the senior year; therefore, they did not see the need for any additional clarifying language regarding this matter.
Committee members also expressed concern about the inclusion of "work experience" as an option for completing the capstone requirement. In general, they felt that the capstone experience should be an academic one, taken for credit. The Committee voted to approve the capstone experiences for the five FLL majors, contingent upon the removal of "work experience" as an option for completing the requirement.
- Natural Sciences
- CAR Form - The following CAR form was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously: Math 600-599 Capstone Experience (new).
- It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to add a capstone experience to the mathematical sciences majors.
- It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to add a capstone experience to the geoscience major.
- It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to add a capstone experience to the conservation and environmental science major.
- It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to establish an additional physics major with mechanical engineering degree option. Committee members noted that the proposal did not contain a capstone requirement. In addition, the proposal would require students to take only 14 advanced credits in the physics curricular area; the College requires that students in all L&S majors take 15 advanced credits in residence in their majors. It was suggested that the Physics Department add a one credit research, independent study, or seminar course to the major requirements. This would provide both a capstone experience and the additional advanced credit required by L&S policies. It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to table this proposal.
- Request for Entitlement to Plan a Major in Actuarial Science - see above.
- It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the L&S Faculty and the Dean approval of the proposal to eliminate the W-I requirement.
Committee members agreed to consider two additional CAR forms.
It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR forms:
| Math 600-341 |
Seminar: Introduction to the Language and Practice of Mathematics (#241, descrip) |
| Spanish 912-311 |
Advanced Grammar and Composition II (title, prereq) |
- Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 2:40 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Connie Jo
