History 448-380   Buddhism: A Cultural History (title, prereq)

The agenda was suspended to address the business of interest to the Committee's guests.

It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean and the Faculty approval of Item VI.B.1, a request for an entitlement to plan a major in women's studies. Ellie Miller and Kathy Miller-Dillon were available to answer questions from Committee members. Several suggestions for minor changes were made. There was brief discussion of the rationale, and it was suggested that changes be considered before forwarding the proposal to the Faculty. The motion was approved unanimously.

The Committee returned to the order of the agenda.

  4. Procedural Matters - none
  5. Old Business
    1. Community Program in Jewish Studies - nothing to report
    2. Committee Interdisciplinary Major - The Committee reviewed a draft response to the APCC's recommendations regarding the CIM. It was suggested that item #5 be modified to clarify that issues of program resources and faculty compensation for the formal submajors were addressed by the coordinating committees, and it was not necessary for the Course and Curriculum Committee to do so. There are no such issues for the individualized majors.

  6. New Business
    1. Social Sciences
      1. Proposal to Revise the Requirements for the Concentrated Study in Two Departments, History - It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the dean approval of a revision in the History Department's requirements for the concentrated study.
    2. Humanities
      1. Request for an Entitlement to Plan a Major in Women's Studies - addressed earlier
    3. Natural Sciences - none
    4. Other
      1. Approval of Courses in Non-Departmental Curricular Areas - A draft of a possible policy, written by Vince Cronin, was discussed. Committee members reached a general consensus that two issues were involved: approval of a course's content and arrangements for staffing approved courses. The C&CC should address only the former; the latter is an internal department matter. Nevertheless, the C&CC should be vigilant in requesting consultation from departments with a potential interest in the proposed course. It was moved, seconded, and approved to table the proposed policy statement to allow the Chair time to draft some revisions, based on the Committee's discussions.

Associate Dean Charles Schuster and Connie Jo reported that some questions concerning curricular turf had arisen during the preparation of the fall schedule. There appears to be the need for some oversight of such issues, and the C&CC seems to be the appropriate committee for this purpose. Of particular concern is the absence of any review in the assignment of subtitles for variable content courses. The Chair will attempt to develop some ideas on this matter in his rewriting of the policy statement discussed above.
      2. Draft Memo to Department Chairs and Program Coordinators - The Committee reviewed the draft memo to departments and suggested elimination of the last item relating to the W-I requirement, since this requirement is under discussion by the W-I subcommittee. The Committee modified the item relating to reviews for GER/CD credit by eliminating the second sentence. The draft was approved as modified.

  7. Adjournment - The meeting adjourned at 3:56 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
