2000-2001
Academic Planning Committee
Meeting: Tuesday, October 24, 2000, 10:00 a.m.
Holton Hall 241

Minutes No. 2

Present: Swarnjit Arora, Margaret Atherton, Gerald Bergtrom, Mark Harris, Renee Meyers, Eleanor Miller, Erl Olfe (ex officio), Mark Schwartz
Guests: Celi Jeske, Connie Jo, Richard Meadows, Tom O'Bryan

  1. Call to Order - The Chair, Mark Schwartz, called the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m. in HLT 241.

  2. Automatic Consent
    1. Minutes #1 (September 26, 2000) were approved as submitted.

  3. Procedural Matters - None

  4. Old Business
    1. Parameters for a School within a College - Deferred

  5. New Business
    1. Proposals for "Investing in UWM's Future" (Part I)
      Tom O'Bryan gave an overview of some broad themes that the College will support that Dean Goodman outlined at the recent chairs' meeting (Big Science, International/Global Passport, Degree Linkage, Honors Initiative, Wisconsin Worldwide). Richard Meadows reiterated the Provost's remarks that proposals needed to fit within The Milwaukee Idea's "Three E's" (Education, Environment, Economic Development) if they were to be considered for new GPR funding. He noted that the College had more time to respond to the Provost on proposals that did not request new GPR. A general discussion of how to proceed with the review ensued. Members agreed to evaluate proposals based on the following criteria in order of priority:
      1. quality of the proposal in terms of advancing the mission of the College;
      2. connection to the "Three E's," implying viability for new GPR funds;
      3. fit with one of the Dean's five groups.
      Proposals that do not rely on new GPR will be deferred. At the October 30 meeting, the Committee will try to identify, to recommend to the Dean, 6-10 proposals that seem correctly positioned and strong enough to have a chance to get new GPR.

  6. Adjournment - The meeting adjourned at 11:00 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Connie Jo
Secretary to the L&S Faculty
