Minutes No. 10

Present:   Swarnjit Arora, Gerald Bergtrom, Alice Gillam, Pat Kissinger (ex officio), Renee Meyers, Stacey Oliker, David Schultz, Mark Schwartz
Guests: Victor Greene, Mark Harris, Thomas Holme, Gabrielle Verdier

  1. Call to Order - The Chair, Mark Schwartz, called the meeting to order at 1:04 p.m. in HLT 241.


  2. Automatic Consent
    1. Minutes #9 (June 5, 2001) were approved as submitted.

  3. Procedural Matters
    1. Election of Chair for 2001-2002 - The Committee voted unanimously to appoint Renee Meyers as chair for Semester I and Gerald Bergtrom as chair for Semester II of the academic year.

  4. Old Business
    1. School of Journalism and Mass Communication - This item will be removed from the agenda pending receipt of the information requested of the department by the previous committee.

  5. New Business
    1. Position Requests - The Committee discussed various aspects of considering position requests.
      1. Replacements - It was moved, seconded, and approved that replacement positions be filled as requested, preferably at the lowest rank requested.
      2. New Positions
        1. It was moved and seconded that the Committee support the two-FTE model submitted for the Women's Studies position. The motion passed on a 3-1-3 vote.
        2. For remaining positions, each member submitted her/his top ten choices. The results were tallied and ranked according to the number of votes each request received for inclusion in the top ten. The following ranking of positions will be forwarded to the dean:

          Commun 5 votes
          Economics 5 votes
          FICL 4 votes
          JMC 4 votes
          Geosci 3 votes

  6. Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 2:52 p.m.
