- Proposal for a Center for Celtic Studies - John Gleeson and Connie Jo answered questions regarding the proposal. Although a proposal for a Certificate Program was attached to the Center proposal as an appendix, approval of the certificate currently is not within the purview of the APC. Concerns were expressed that the research component of the Center was not explained well enough. In addition, there were questions about the budget, particularly regarding the staffing costs. Connie Jo explained the desire of the College to secure approval of the Center before the end of the academic year so that the President of Ireland can be invited to dedicate the Center when she visits in October. The Committee moved, seconded, and approved unanimously the following:
That the Faculty of the College of Letters and Science approve the establishment of a Center for Celtic Studies as described in Fac. Doc. No. 590, effective September 2001, contingent upon clarification of the budget and revision of the proposal to strengthen the description of the Center's research component, and subject to the review and approval of the L&S Academic Planning Committee.
Committee members agreed to meet again very soon to review the revised proposal. The Ad Hoc Celtic Studies Committee will attempt to complete those revisions within the next two weeks.
- L&S Deans Search Update - Dave Schultz, a member of the Search Committee, reported on the progress of the committee's work. There currently are 43 candidates. A preliminary screening has been conducted on the basis of the content of vitae. Committee members now are calling references. Applications are NOT closed, and Dave was urged to ask the Committee to send out a notice to L&S faculty, informing them that this is the case and encouraging any interested individuals to apply. Dave distributed a brief summary (copy attached) of the committee's work to date.
