- L&S Dean Search - Mark Schwartz asked Dave Schultz to give his perspective of the search process and the Search Committee. Dave said that the Search Committee is very receptive to working with the APC. Its members agree that the APC members should be able to meet with the candidates. The Search Committee prepared a draft statement of qualities in a new dean, based on the original six questions suggested by APC, and APC was asked for its feedback. APC members noted that their original question #6 (addressing the role of liberal arts education in the 21st century) had been eliminated, two other questions combined, a question on diversity added, and all the questions reordered. Reactions to the new draft in general were supportive, but most members agreed that the candidates were given too much information about how the questions should be answered. After some discussion, the committee agreed to recommend to the Search Committee that the following questions be used:
- We are looking for a dean who has a vision of the role of liberal arts and sciences education in the twenty-first century. What is your vision of this role?
- We are looking for a dean who can strengthen the College's graduate programs and research activities to elevate UWM's standing as a research institution. How would you accomplish this?
- We are looking for a dean who will support innovative ideas for providing a quality undergraduate experience. In your view, how can the College improve the undergraduate educational experience to make UWM the first choice of applicants?
- We are looking for a Dean who is committed to diversity, one who has experience and a record of achieving diversity in the past. In your view, how can the College enhance the diversity of its undergraduate and graduate students as well as its faculty, staff, and administrators?
- We are looking for a Dean who understands and supports faculty governance and who will forge constructive relationships with L&S faculty and staff, with other units on campus, and with campus administration. How would your leadership and administrative styles accomplish these goals?
- Adjournment As there was no other business before the Committee, the meeting was adjourned at 2:56 p.m.
