  1. Call to Order--The Chair, Doug Cherkauer, called the meeting to order at 8:34 a.m. in Holton 241.

  3. Old Business
    1. Master's Program Survey--The Chair presented a summary table of information from the surveys. One correction was noted. The members will review the table more thoroughly and report any additional corrections to the chair.

  4. New Business
    1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal by the Department of History to delete the Public History Certificate program but to retain a public history specialization within the master's degree. Discussion centered on the department's request to have the specialization posted on the student's transcript. Currently, this is not done by the Graduate School. Committee members charged the Chair to write a memo to the Dean, calling special attention to this request, which the committee endorses. The motion was approved unanimously.
    2. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal by the Department of Geography for changes in its Ph.D. program requirements. Discussion focused on the elimination of the foreign language requirement. It was moved and seconded to amend the proposal by adding a statement* to the "Course of Study" section encouraging foreign language study when it is needed for a program with an international focus. The amendment was approved. The motion was approved as amended, with one abstention.

        * Approved statement: If appropriate to the proposed area of study, the student's committee will recommend that s/he will acquire the necessary competence in a foreign language.

    3. The draft Report on Doctoral Program Array at UWM was discussed briefly. It was noted that a final version has been completed, but it is not yet widely available. Connie will attempt to secure the final report for committee members.

  5. Adjournment – The meeting was adjourned at 9:48 a.m.
