College of Letters and Science Faculty Document No. 557
April 10, 2000

RECOMMENDATION OF THE L&S COURSE AND CURRICULUM COMMITTEE THAT THE DEPARTMENTS OF THE COLLEGE OF LETTERS AND SCIENCE BE GIVEN THE OPTION TO PARTICIPATE IN OFFERING POST-BACCALAUREATE MINORS AND CERTIFICATES

Recommendations

  1. That the College permit the granting of post-baccalaureate minors or certificates, with the provision that students must meet the minor or certificate requirements in effect at the time they enter the post-baccalaureate minor or certificate program;

  2. That this recommendation be effective Fall, 2000.

Rationale

The Vice Chancellor has granted approval to the College of Engineering and Applied Science to award post-baccalaureate minors. This option has been offered to all schools and colleges. The College of Letters and Science currently participates in the second-degree program and the post-baccalaureate majors program. In addition, some certificate programs have written provisions that allow granting the certificates after the student has earned a baccalaureate degree. The Course and Curriculum Committee urges the Faculty to extend to students the opportunity to earn a post-baccalaureate minor and to make clear, through this legislation, that a post-baccalaureate option also is open to certificate programs.

Implementation

  1. Chairs/coordinators of departments/interdisciplinary minors who wish to participate in the post-baccalaureate minors program should notify the Office of the Dean, L&S (Connie Jo) of their intention to do so.

  2. Coordinators of certificate programs that currently are not available to students who already have earned the baccalaureate degree should modify the language of their certificate program parameters if they wish to participate in offering the post-baccalaureate certificate.

  3. Students who wish to earn a post-baccalaureate minor or certificate apply and are admitted as L&S special students. The College, in approving the application, must indicate below the signature that the student is pursuing a post-baccalaureate minor or certificate.

  4. The College will track the completion of the minor or certificate and notify the appropriate person in the graduation processing area when it is completed. The minor or certificate will be posed both on the campus copy and official transcript.
