RECOMMENDATION OF THE CENTER FOR TWENTIETH CENTURY STUDIES AND THE ACADEMIC PLANNING COMMITTEE TO CHANGE THE CENTER'S NAME

Recommendation:

That the name of the Center for Twentieth Century Studies be changed to the Center for Twenty-First Century Studies, effective July 1, 2000.

Rationale:

At a meeting of the Center's Advisory Board in the fall, members had a spirited and creative discussion about the name of the Center. Many names were proposed, including the "Center for New Studies in Culture: and "Studies in New Century Thought." The director, after speaking with many people about this topic, concluded that in the absence of a major donor, after whom the Center could be named, the best name would be the "Center for Twenty-First Century Studies. The distinct advantage of this name is that people will know that this is the Center previously known as the Center for Twentieth Century Studies. The Center will have continuity and will suffer no loss of recognition (there are many centers around the country with vague names such as the "Center for Cultural Studies" or the "Center for Advanced Studies in Culture). Moreover, the name is simple. And it serves to remind people that the Center's mission is to be on the cutting edge of issues central to the humanities and humanistic social sciences. The name was circulated to member of the Advisory Committee and all responding concurred in this choice.
