RECOMMENDATION OF THE COMMITTEE ON COMMITTEES TO AMEND THE CHARTER OF THE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Recommendation:

That the charter of the L&S Affirmative Action Advisory Committee be amended, as indicated below, to provide for three year membership terms on a staggered basis and to require that the committee meet at least once each semester.

Rationale

The Committee on Committees, in its efforts to carry out it charge from the faculty to review the L&S Faculty standing committees, discovered that the Affirmative Action Advisory Committee had been inactive for some time. Efforts were made to arrange meetings with the members of this committee to discuss its role. With the assistance of Associate Dean Donna Van Wynsberghe, Human Relations Council and ex officio member of the committee, two meetings were held. But there appears to be little movement toward a more active role for this committee. The members of the Committee on Committees discussed this situation and recommended longer terms of membership for committee members, more in line with those of other committees. It is the hope of the CoC members that election to three-year staggered terms will provide continuity and experience that, before now, has been lacking.
