April 10, 2000 RECOMMENDATION OF THE OFF-CAMPUS PROGRAMS COMMITTEE TO ABOLISH THE OFF-CAMPUS PROGRAMS COMMITTEE Recommendation: That the L&S Off-Campus Programs Committee (OCP) be abolished effective Summer, 2000, and that the Committee on Committees reassign OCP's functions, if necessary, to other committees. Rationale: During the 1996-1997 academic year, the Committee on Committees conducted a review of the Off-Campus Programs Committee (OCP) at the direction of the L&S Faculty. At that time, it appeared that the OCP had not met in a number of years. No minutes or annual reports from the previous ten years could be located. The Committee on Committees recommended a number of changes in the OCP charter that it thought might help the OCP to be more active. The OCP held one meeting in 1997-1998 at which it endorsed the BAOA, a program that was reviewed by another Faculty committee as well, the Course and Curriculum Committee. At that meeting, some members expressed a sense that the OCP might have a more active role in the future, given the expansion of distance education and other new technologies and course delivery models. However, the OCP did not elect a chair, either for that year or for the coming year, and no further meetings were scheduled. On March 3, 2000, the OCP met at the request of L&S Administration. After some discussion of the committee's charge, members agreed that most of its functions already were carried out by other College or campus-level committees, or they could be reassigned to more active committees. Members unanimously passed the motion to abolish the Off-Campus Programs Committee. |
