April 10, 2000 RECOMMENDATION OF THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR THE UWM GAY AND LESBIAN STUDIES CERTIFICATE PROGRAM TO CHANGE THE NAME OF THE PROGRAM TO "LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER STUDIES" Recommendation for Action: That the name of the "Gay and Lesbian Studies" certificate program be changed to "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies," effective Semester I, 2000-2001. Rationale: The proposed language is more current, accurate, and inclusive than the approved language, which might seem suggest that the program is about and for people identified as gay and lesbian but not others. Current because work in many disciplines emphasizes sexual diversity rather than the traditional dichtomomy between homosexuality and heterosexuality. Accurate because the introductory course and most courses that count for credit toward the certificate are already taught in this way. Inclusive because students interested in sexual diversity more generally will realize that their interests are addressed in the program. "LGBT" has become standard language in academic programs, conferences, and publications across the country. Approved by: Gay and Lesbian Studies Committee Date: 31 January 1999 |
