Meetings

The Graduate Program Committee of the College of Letters and Science held five meetings during the academic year to carry out its functions as authorized by the Rules Governing the Letters and Science Faculty Chapter 2.12.

Legislative Recommendations

The following recommendations were forwarded to the Dean for his action or referral to the Faculty:

  1. approval of the Master's in Liberal Studies Curricular Area Code (537)

  2. approval of the implementation plan for the Master's in Liberal Studies.

  3. approval of subcommittee report endorsing recommendations regarding Geography and Geosciences Ph.D. programs.

  4. approval of strong agreement outlining problems with the PAR process.

  5. approval of the recommendations of the faculty of the Industrial and Labor Relations Program Committee of the College of L&S and of the faculty of the School of Business Administration for a revision of the requirements of the existing graduate program in Human Resources and Labor Relations.

  6. approval of the change in title of the 952 Curricular Area Code from Urban Studies Program to Urban Studies.

  7. approval of the change in requirements for the Translation Certificate.

  8. approval of the change in requirements for the MAFLL, Translation Track.

  9. approval of the proposal for a coordinated degree program leading to the MS in Anthropology and the Masters in Library and Information Science.

  10. approval of the proposal to add a quality of work requirement to the MA in Mass Communication.

Issues of General Policy

The Committee, by unanimous consent, elected Doug Cherkauer to serve as the chair of the 1999-2000 committee.

The Committee appointed David Heathcote and Gabrielle Verdier to a combined subcommittee (with APC and C&CC) to review sabbatical requests.

Members were asked to identify faculty members who would be willing to serve on the Graduate School Research Committee. A member from the social sciences, not Psychology or Sociology, is needed, but nominees from all areas will be sought in case other vacancies occur.

Members discussed the process of awarding NRTR scholarships at the request of the Graduate School for feedback regarding the possibility of turning over the entire process to the schools and colleges. Committee members agreed the process either needs to be all done in the College or all done by the Graduate School. GPC members expressed their willingness to take responsibility for this function. The Graduate School, after considering all submissions, decided to resume complete responsibility for the process.

Respectfully submitted,

Douglas Cherkauer
David Heathcote
Fred Helmstetter
Thomas Holbrook
Connie Jo, Ex officio
James Kuist, Chair
Mark Schwartz
Donald Solomon
Gabrielle Verdier
William Wainwright
