Academic Policies and Appeals Committee
Annual Report 1998-99

The Academic Policies and Appeals Committee met twice during the 1998-99 academic year: March 10, 1999, and April 14, 1999.

March 10

Fred Anapol was unanimously elected as Chair of the new committee (a merger of the Admissions Policies and the Academic Standing and Appeals committees).

A data base of L&S students will be developed with information such as how students fare at the university and retention rates. The Committee will also study university admissions standards.

The Committee considered a request from Gabrielle Verdier to change in the College's "High School Special Admission Policies." Members approved the addition of the statement "In exceptional cases, these requirements may be waived" to the policy.

The Committee agreed to consider a new grievance procedure for the College's departments.

Members discussed a proposal of campus administration to adopt a uniform teaching evaluation. The Committee agreed that the administration should look at the Senate policy and increase efforts to enforce it, but no formal action by the College need be taken immediately.

April 14

The Committee asked Gabrielle Verdier to explain her reasons for requesting a reconsideration of the Committee's March 10 vote on altering the High School Special Admission Policies. The language regarding appeals was retained, but the Committee approved changing the admission criteria as follows:

  1. Rank in the upper 25% of high school class.
  2. Have a 3.5 gpa in the area of desired study.

L&S Admission Requirements were discussed and will be considered further at a future meeting.

The grievance procedure draft was tabled for additional revisions.
