Academic Planning Committee
Annual Report 1998-1999

The Academic Planning Committee held nine meetings during the 1998-99 academic year. The meetings were held on September 1, September 23, November 18, December 16, March 24, March 31, April 21, May 19 and June 9.

The Committee considered the following topics:

PAR Recommendations

The committee reviewed the report of the Joint Subcommittee on L&S PAR Response. Members agreed with the recommendations in the report, but concern was expressed over the fact that the subcommittee's report addressed only those programs targeted for elimination and for consolidation. However, the report was endorsed and sent to the dean with a cover letter identifying the actions taken by the APC in addressing the PAR and that focused on the on-going activities of the committee and the College in response to PAR.

The committee discussed program summaries and assessments and decided that the two items should be merged.

The committee members agreed that the APC should discuss the College's array of programs and activities on a regular basis, not because of PAR, but because such discussions are important to the planning process. Members agreed to continue this discussion at the June 9 meeting and also to discuss the process for reviewing sabbatical requests, as well as how reviews of centers and certificate programs might be conducted.

Position Requests

Position requests for new hires for the 2000-2001 academic year were reviewed by division. The number of requests made it impossible to complete the reviews in a single day. The meeting was suspended twice and reconvened on May 5 and May 12. Members of the Committee approved the following recruitment recommendations to the dean:
