Present: Mike Allen, Bettina Arnold, James Coggins, Connie Jo (ex officio), William Kean, Jeffrey Merrick, Jane Nardin
Excused:   Michael Day, Charles Schuster (ex officio), Roy Swanson

  1. Professor William Kean, the Chair of the Committee, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. in Holton 241.

  2. Automatic Consent
    1. Minutes #4 (November 9, 1999) were approved as submitted.
    2. There were no objections to these Special Listing Requests:
      Asian St Hist 448-200 Historical Roots of Contemporary Issues (with appropriate subtitle) Certif Prog
      Bio Sci Psych 820-254 Physiological Psychology Crosslisted
      Bio Sci Psych 820-654 Advanced Physiological Psychology Crosslisted

    3. There were no objections to these Writing-Intensive course requests:

  4. Old Business
    1. Community Program in Jewish Studies - nothing to report
    2. Quality of Work Requirement in the Major - nothing to report
    3. Film Studies Curricular Area Code
      It was moved, seconded, and approved to take from the table the proposal for a film studies curricular area code. It was moved and seconded to approve the proposal. Discussion centered on whether it was necessary to have a more comprehensive plan for the film studies area, showing the need for the code. It was moved and seconded to table the proposal.

      At this point, Connie Jo arrived at the meeting. The committee suspended its rules to ask for additional background on the proposal. Following that report, the mover and seconder of the motion to table withdrew the motion. After some additional discussion, the original motion to approve the proposal was passed with one abstention.

  5. New Business
    1. Natural Sciences
      1. The following Course Action Request was recommended unanimously to the Dean for approval:
        Honors 462-380 Honors Seminar in the Arts: (Subtitle) (prereq)
    2. Social Sciences
      1. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean that the Urban Affairs Curricular Area Code be dropped.
      2. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean that the proposal from Psychology to add a course to its "Foundations" group be approved.
    3. Humanities
      1. The following Course Action Requests were recommended unanimously to the Dean for approval:
        English *350-565 Introduction to Adult/University Level TESOL (new, j-o)
        English *350-567   Materials for ESL Instruction (new)
        English *350-569 Internship in Teaching ESL to Adult Learners (new)
        * contingent upon clarification of departmental approval
        Linguis 550-565 Introduction to Adult/University Level TESOL (#[426], title, descrip, prereq, j-o)
        Spanish 912-119 Spanish for Social Services and Law Enforcement I (new)
        Spanish 912-120 Spanish for the Health Professions I (title,descrip, prereq)
        Spanish   912-121   Spanish for the Health and Social Services II (prereq
      2. The following Cultural Diversity Request was recommended unanimously to the Dean for approval:
        English   ^350-192   Freshman Seminar: Southeast Asian American Literature and Life Stories subtitle
        ^ contingent upon clarification of departmental approval
        Committee members asked Connie Jo to contact Mary Louise Buley-Meissner to explain that minor changes in the title of her Asian-American literature course require a new request for approval each time.

  6. The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 a.m.
