Present: Michael Allen, Bettina Arnold, Jay Beder, James Coggins, Connie Jo (ex officio), William Kean, Jeffrey Merrick, Jane Nardin, Roy Swanson
Excused:   Michael Day

  1. Professor William Kean, the Chair of the Committee, called the meeting to order at 9:04 a.m. in Holton 241.

  2. Automatic Consent
    1. Minutes #2 (September 28, 1999) were approved as submitted.

  3. Procedural Matters - None

  4. Old Business
    1. Community Program in Jewish Studies - nothing to report
    2. Concentrated Study in Two Departments (or Curricular Areas) - Committee members reviewed the text of the policy they had approved at the last meeting as well as the draft rationale. It was moved and seconded to approve the policy and rationale. Amendments for editorial changes to the policy and the draft rationale were moved, seconded, and approved. The policy proposal was approved unanimously as amended. A copy is attached to these minutes.

  5. New Business
    1. Social Sciences
      1. A motion to grant "International" status in meeting L&S degree requirements to Geog 416-213 was seconded and approved unanimously.
      2. CAR Forms - The following CAR form was recommended to the Dean:
        Geog 416-213 Geography of Asia (desc)

    2. Humanities
      1. CAR Forms - The following CAR forms were recommended to the Dean:
        ESL 352-118 Writing Argumentation in English as a Second Language (prer)
        Wmns 958-400   Women's Studies Research and Methods: (Subtitle) (new)
        Wmns 958-401 Global Feminisms: (Subtitle) (new)
        Wmns 958-402 Capstone Seminar in Women's Studies: (Subtitle) (new)

    3. Natural Sciences
      1. A motion to approve a proposal to change the name of the "Biological Aspects of Conservation" major to "Conservation and Environmental Science" was seconded and approved unanimously.
      2. CAR Forms - The following CAR forms were recommended to the Dean:
        Chem 224-691 Senior Thesis (desc, prer)
        Chem 224-692 Senior Thesis (desc, prer)

  6. The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 a.m.
