  1. The Chair, Bill Kean, called the meeting to order at 9:03 a.m. in Holton 241.

  2. Automatic Consent
    1. Minutes #11 - May 13, 1999 were amended to add 11:30 as the time of adjournment. The minutes were approved as amended.
    2. The Committee's annual report was approved as submitted.
    3. There were no objections to the W-I course proposals:

  3. Procedural Matters
    1. Jane Nardin was elected co-chair of the committee by unanimous vote.
    2. The following sub-committee chairs were elected:

    3. The following appointments to the W-I Subcommittee were made:

      Bettina Arnold Social Sciences 99-01 (2 year vacancy)
    4. The Committee agreed to meet every three weeks on Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. The following will be the remaining Fall Semester meeting dates: September 28, October 19; November 9, 30; December 21.

    The agenda was suspended to accommodate a guest from Geosciences.

    It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of revisions in the Geosciences major program.
    It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of revisions in the Geosciences minor program.

    The committee returned to the order of the agenda.

  4. Old Business

    It was moved, seconded, and approved to delay discussion of Old Business until all New Business was completed. Many of the items under New Business must be considered at this meeting in order to secure all approvals in time to have them reflected in the Spring Schedule of Classes.

  5. New Business
    1. Humanities
      1. CAR Forms - It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR forms:

      2. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to amend the requirements of the minor in Business Spanish (Non-Business Students Track).
      3. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to amend the requirements of the minor in Business Spanish (Business Students Track).
      4. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to create a Minor in Business French.
      5. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to establish a curricular area code (368) in Film Studies. It then was moved, seconded, and approved (with one dissenting vote) to amend the motion to add "contingent upon receipt of an indication from the Departments of Art History and English that they have no objections to this action. The amended motion was approved.
      6. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to change the name of the Center for Latin America.
      7. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal for certificate program in Adult/University Level TESOL. It was the consensus of the Committee that editorial changes suggested by Professor Swanson be forwarded to the authors of the proposal prior to forwarding the proposal to the APCC.

      The agenda was suspended to accommodate a guest interested in the last agenda item.

      D.  It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal by Professor Lex Renda to change the quality of work requirement in the major. Professor Renda expressed concern about the fact that students repeat courses, rather than taking new course work, to raise their major GPAs. Erl Olfe suggested that the proposal be tabled to allow his office time to review records of graduates for the past three semesters to determine the extent of the problem that concerns Professor Renda. Mr. Olfe indicated that his staff would try to develop alternatives that might define the issue more clearly. Connie Jo reported that she had spoken with Professor Renda that morning. He indicated that the purpose of his proposal was simply to put the issue before the committee for discussion. He was not concerned that there be a vote taken immediately, and he was happy to consider alternative suggestions that would address the problem. It was moved, seconded, and approved to table the original motion.

      The committee returned to the order of the agenda.

      3. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication to change the name of its major to Journalism and Mass Communication.
      4. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication to change the requirements of its Advertising/Public Relations sub-major.

  6. Given the time, it was agreed to hold over the Old Business until the next meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 11:55 a.m.
