Minutes No. 12

Present:     Mike Allen, Bettina Arnold, James Coggins, Michael Day, Connie Jo (ex officio), William Kean, Jeffrey Merrick, Jane Nardin, Roy Swanson

  1. Call to Order – The chair, Bill Kean called the meeting to order at 9:34 a.m. in Holton Hall 241.

  2. Automatic Consent
    1. Minutes #11 (April 19, 2000) were approved as submitted.
    2. There were no objections to the Special Listing Requests (see complete list in Agenda #12). They stand approved.
    3. There were no objections to the following CAR forms; they stand approved.
      English 350-432 The Rhetoric of Argument (#437)
      French 400-103     First-Semester French (prereq)
      French 400-104 Second-Semester French (prereq)

  3. Procedural Matters
    1. Professor Jeffrey Merrick was elected unanimously as Committee chair for the 2000-2001 academic year.
    2. It was moved, seconded, and approved to authorize the chair to act on behalf of the Committee on non-controversial business during the summer.

  4. Old Business
    1. Community Program in Jewish Studies - nothing to report
    2. Quality of Work Requirement in the Major - nothing to report
    3. Draft Memo to APCC Regarding GERs - Committee members agreed that the memo should not be sent. They also agreed, however, that the L&S C&CC should act upon requests for GER credit with stricter attention to the original guidelines. The Chair and Chair-elect with draft a memo this summer to be reviewed by the Committee in the fall and sent to the departments informing them of the Committee's intent to adhere more strictly to the guidelines.

  5. New Business
    1. Humanities (see also D below)
      It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR: English 350-4xx Document Planning and Evaluation. Professor Jane Nardin indicated that this CAR had not been considered at an English Department meeting. It was moved, seconded, and approved to table the course until the Committee received word from the Chair of the English Department that the course had been approved.

      Committee members agreed that the memo sent from the Committee to departments in the fall should contain a reminder that notification of the Secretary to the L&S Faculty that a CAR is ready for processing carries the implication of departmental approval. Chairs should be asked to remind faculty members that they must follow department procedures for the proposal of course actions.

    4. Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program with CAR Forms
      It was moved, seconded, and approved to endorse the UROP, to recommend approval of the CAR forms listed below, and to grant automatic approval to additional UROP Seminar and Apprenticeship courses when they are developed and submitted to the Committee.
      English 350-296     UROP Apprenticeship (new)
      L&S HU 530-296 UROP Apprenticeship (new)
      L&S NS 532-296 UROP Apprenticeship (new)
      L&S SS 534-294 UROP Seminar I (new)
      L&S SS 534-295     UROP Seminar II (new)
      L&S SS 534-296 UROP Apprenticeship (new)
      Psych 820-296 UROP Apprenticeship (new)
    5. It was moved, seconded, and approved to amend the agenda to add a CAR:
      Anthro 156-305     The Celtic World (new)
      It was moved, seconded, and approved to approve the course, contingent on clearing it with the Department of English and the Associate Dean for the Social Sciences.
    6. It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to thank and commend the chair, Professor William Kean, for his fine work in leading the Committee for two years.

  6. Adjournment - There being no additional business before the Committee, the meeting was adjourned at 10:37 a.m.
