  1. Call to Order - The chair, Mark Schwartz, called the meeting to order at 9:36 a.m. in Holton Hall 131.

  2. Automatic Consent - Minutes #7 (June 7, 2000) were approved as submitted.

  3. Procedural Matters - None

  4. Old Business
    1. Parameters for a School within a College--continue tabled

    2. Evaluating New Position Requests

Members discussed how they would proceed. Ellie Miller suggested that the Committee needs to spend some time at a future meeting discussing what kinds of additional information would help members make better decisions. Some items suggested were copies of graduate reviews and enrollment statistics. There was concern expressed that this process not become another PAR. Members agreed they would list their top ten choices and then evaluate if there were positions that received strong support from a majority of members. The meeting was moved to a classroom, HLT 180, to have a chalkboard available to listing the votes.

The voting resulted in the following rankings, and members agreed to forward this information, without additional prioritizing, to the Dean.

      1.   Mathematical Sciences (8 votes)
      2.   Political Science (7 votes)
3-5.   Biological Sciences, Philosophy, Physics (6 votes)
6-9.   Anthropology, Art History, Communication, Economics (5 votes)
10-12.   Chemistry, Geography, Sociology (4 votes)

Members then discussed the question of senior hires and agreed to recommend to the dean that the position in Mathematical Sciences be established at the senior level. The others all should be hired as assistant professors (or instructors).

Committee returned to a discussion of other information that would be helpful. It was suggested that the Associate Deans meet with the Committee to give their views of the status of each department's faculty/staff needs. Members indicated they would like to know the number of majors, the number of FTE vs ad hoc faculty/staff teaching undergraduate courses, the ratio of undergraduate enrollments to FTE faculty/staff, the level of attrition of the faculty in departments from some specific reference point in time. Members agreed to put this item on the agenda of a future meeting for discussion.

  5. New Business - None

  6. Adjournment – The meeting was adjourned at 11:03 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
