  1. Call to Order - The chair, Mark Schwartz, called the meeting to order at 1:32 p.m. in Holton Hall 241.

  2. Automatic Consent - Minutes #6 (May 31, 2000) were approved as submitted.

  3. Procedural Matters - None

  4. Old Business
    1. Parameters for a School within a College – continue tabled
    2. Evaluating Replacement Position Requests
      Connie explained how the list of replacement positions was derived and answered questions concerning specific positions. There was a brief discussion about how to proceed. Connie also reported that Dean Goodman indicated we would be able to do only 2-3 senior hires, and those only in departments where the salaries would be 1.25 - 1.5 times a mean salary of about $48,000.

      Committee reviewed recruitment proposals by departments for positions that they have open for replacement. Members decided to give committee recommendations concerning these replacement positions to the dean immediately so departments can get an early start in the hiring process. The Committee recommendations are given below. With two exceptions (indicated below), all hires are recommended at the assistant professor level. Committee members agreed that the Department of Sociology should be permitted to hire just one assistant professor as a replacement for Professor Squires.

        Humanities
        English (6 positions: Blau, Bontly, Chang, Joyrich, Kuist, Woodward)
        1. Rhetoric and Composition (senior hire recommended)
        2. Creative Writing: Fiction
        3. Film Studies
        4. Modern Literature and Critical Theory
        5. African American Literature
        6. Film History and Criticism

        FLL (1 position: Shey)
        1. Recommend hiring with specialty undetermined; department should indicate its top priority

        FICL (1 position: Mueller)
        1. Comparative Literature

        Spanish and Portuguese (2 positions: Perez de Mendiola, Vilches)
        1. Spanish (spousal hire)
        2. Spanish Peninsular Literature (senior hire recommended)

      The Committee also took the following action:

      It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend that the College designate $15,000 for the Women's Studies position approved by the PAR process in order to hire a department leader at a senior level. It is assumed that these funds will be available from salary savings by hiring most replacement faculty at the assistant professor level.

    3. Evaluating New Position Requests - deferred until early July
