Academic Planning Committee 1997-98 Annual Report

The Academic Planning Committee held three meetings during the 1997-1998 academic year. The first two meetings were held on April 21, 1998 and August 11, 1998. The third meeting was started on August 12, 1998 and was suspended and reconvened three times, on August 18, 20, and 25.

The Committee was unable to elect a willing chair; therefore, the members agreed to come to order at the appointed time and to follow less formal rules for conducting meetings. For the final two meetings, Mark Schwartz, member-elect, agreed to preside over discussion.

The Committee considered the following topics:

Program Array Review (PAR)
At the April meeting, Dean Goodman met with the committee members and updated them on the PAR process, and asked the Committee's advice on his response to the Vice Chancellor. PAR materials were made available to members over the summer. On August 11, the Committee members decided to delay consideration of the PAR recommendations until the Committee finished its work on position requests.

Committee Charter
The Committee approved a proposal to the L&S Faculty to change the APC Charter.

Position Requests
At the August 11 meeting, members discussed procedures for evaluating position requests. Requests were reviewed at the third meeting, which extended over four days. Recommendations were forwarded in a letter to the dean.

1998-99 Committee Chair
Mark Schwartz was elected chair for 1998-99.

Respectfully submitted,

Larry Baldassaro Erland Olfe (staff support)
Marcus Ethridge Richard O'Malley
Connie Horstman (staff support) Leonard Parker
Pat Kissinger (ex-officio) Julio Rodriguez-Luis
Patricia Mellencamp Ronald Ross
Eleanor Miller Craig Sandgren
