November 5, 1998 Committee on Committees Annual Report, 1997-98 The Letters and Science Committee on Committees met six times during the 1997-98 academic year: September 12, November 21, December 12, 1997; January 16, February 27, March 27, 1998. September 12: The Committee elected Mary Lynne Collins as chair, recommended David Mulroy as Parliamentarian, affirmed that advisory committees must report annually to the faculty, adopted a standard outline as a guideline for charters, approved three meetings of the L&S Faculty for 1998-99, and approved the agenda for the October Faculty Meeting. The following sub-committees were organized to continue the review of faculty committee charters: Academic Planning Committee (Collins and Oliker), Academic Standing and Appeals Committee (Moravcsik and Wheatley), Course and Curriculum Committee (Cronin and Hoeveler). In addition, the Committee approved the Nominations Timetable and Procedures for elections to the L&S Faculty Committees for 1998-99. November 21: The Committee adopted a model format for annual reports, approved a vacancies statement for addition to the charters outline, agreed to develop a proposal to combine the Admission Policies Committee and the Academic Standing and Appeals Committee into a single committee, and recommended two individuals for appointment to the MHRLR Coordinating Committee. December 12: The Committee approved the meeting schedule for the Spring semester, adopted a procedure for identifying additional nominees if the preference form did not yield a sufficient number, adopted "boiler-plate language" for charters concerning subcommittees, meetings, and annual reporting, and made the following recommendations concerning committees under review: Academic Planning Committee -- recommended changes to the charter, Academic Standing and Appeals Committee -- pursue merger with the Admission Policy Committee Course and Curriculum Committee -- no action needed. January 16: The Committee recommended that the combined AdP/AS&A Committee be named the "Academic Policies and Appeals Committee," approved a draft charter for the APAC, and set the agenda for the February 5 Faculty Meeting. February 27: The meeting was devoted to completion of the nomination process. The agenda for the April 8 Faculty Meeting was set. March 27: Nominees for Graduate School Committees were identified.
