Welcome to the UWM WWW server's public area!


Here in no particular order are some WWW Rules, Policies, Hints, etc.
Note that this documentation is very preliminary, and will be expanded
and supplemented with other information available from our WWW pages.

 * In order to use advanced features of the WWW server such as FORMS, ISMAP
   (clickable images), searchable indexes, etc. you need to have the server
   run your own program.  These programs can only be run from a special
   "cgi-bin" area, which you now have.

 * Your WWW cgi-bin directory may be referred to on the Alpha as simply
   "www.cgi-bin" in your home directory, or by "~/www.cgi-bin".

 * Programs in your WWW cgi-bin directory are used in your "html" pages as:

	/cgi-bin/login/...

   Note that "login" above should be replaced with your Alpha login id.

 * All programs in your WWW cgi-bin directory need to be publicly executable
   (see the "mkpub" command), and there can be no Unix links to files
   outside of the WWW cgi-bin file area.

 * All WWW-served files must reside in the same special file area set
   aside to serve Anonymous FTP.  All users have a disc quota for this
   area, in addition to the disc quota for home directories.  Unix file
   links to files outside of this area will not work.

 * Our WWW server is version 1.3 of the NCSA HTTPD server.  Information
   about this server and advanced topics such as fill-in FORMS, clickable
   images (ISMAP), "cgi" programs, etc. is available at:

		http://hoohoo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/

 * Note that since anyone in the world can run your cgi-bin programs from
   your WWW pages, you need to be somewhat selective as to what you put out
   there.  Please be careful!

 * A current copy of this documentation may be found in the Alpha directory:

		~WWW/doc

   It may be found on the WWW server under user "WWW" in the public area,
   which has the full URL:

		http://www.uwm.edu/~WWW/
