Public Opinions on Accents

I presented an audio tape of eight speakers to 50 different people who, in turn, wrote down what they believed to be the speakers' age, sex, ethnicity, educational level, physical characteristics, and which part of the world they believed the speaker to be from.  First, try the survey yourself.  Then check out the true identities of the speakers and the results of my survey.

Directions: Grab a pen and paper and get ready!  Click on Speaker #1 to hear the first speaker.  After listening to the speaker, decide what you believe to be their age, sex, ethnicity, educational level, physical characteristics, and which part of the world the speaker is from, being as specific as possible.  Then, move on and click on Speaker #2 and so on until you have listened to each speaker.  When finished, move on to the next section to discover the truths about these people.

 The Results of my Survey

The results below are taken from the responses given to my survey by various people in the state of Wisconsin.  The number next to each description is the number of people who believed this description to be true of the individual speaker they had just listened to.  I only used the descriptions which five or more people recorded.
