Video Tape Entry

It is best to participate in the tryout process in person, because it gives you the opportunity to ask any questions, get some skill tips, and get feedback to help your performance. It is understandable that traveling to campus two weekends in a row will be very difficult for some candidates. So as a second option there is the video tape entry.

In order to qualify for this option...

You must send the dance team coach a letter or email at least a month before tryouts, to request a waiver in order to be excused from the preliminary tryout. The letter must detail what extraordinatory circumstance you have or show that you live too far from Milwaukee to drive here two weekends in a row.

There is a $25.00 charge to cover expenses related to the video tryouts. There is no charge to participate in the tryout process itself. Candidates who will qualify by video must come to campus on the final tryout. Finalist will be notified by email the day of preliminary tryouts.

If your waiver is granted, you must:

  1. Send your video entry to the UWM Dance Team Coach
  2. Include your Dance Team Application
  3. Enclose a check or money order for $25.00 payable to the "Panther Dance Team"

Video requirements:
  1. A short introduction including your name, where you are from, and your dance experience.
  2. A 30 second pom routine of your own choreography or something you have done with your team.
  3. A 1 minute 30 second jazz routine of your own choreography or something you have done with your team.
  4. Show each of the following skills:
toe touch, center leaps (left and right), double and triple pirouettes (left and right), 8-count high kicks facing the side, front leg extension facing the side (left and right), split leaps (left and right), calypso (left and right), and fouettes (2 eight counts).
  5. Both the videotape itself and the cardboard sleeve should be labeled with your name, address, and phone number.
  6. It is best to use a mailing method that allows for tracking to ensure your tape is safely delivered.

You should be the only person on the tape. Please follow the sequence listed in the video requirements above for the video format. The video does not have to be professionally done. However, it is important that your full body is shown at all times and your face can be easily seen. The location of your video is not important, but be sure to pick a location where you can easily perform all the skills necessary (a carpeted area would not be very ideal for turns). Your tapes will not be returned to you.

Judging:

The coach and advisor will review all tapes. Dancers are scored in showmanship, leaps and turns, endurance, and dance technique. Only those candidates meeting the minimum skill level will proceed to finals.

Video Finalist:

You will be sent by priority mail with tracking, a VHS video of the tryout dance routine and fight song you must learn for finals. You then have about a week to prepare for finals. Be sure we have your exact street address in order for the video not to be delayed. The UWM Dance Team is not responsible for lost or stolen video tapes.
