Passport and VISA

The information here is only for Chinese students and scholars at UWM, and not meant to be official. Please contact the right authorities for official answers. For example, before you travel (go back to China, visit your friends in Canada, attend a meeting in Europe, etc.), you'd better talk to someone at the Center for International Education - International Student & Scholar Services on VISA issues. When it comes to the questions on "how-to", visiting the following web sites will be very helpful. Warning: by clicking the following links in this section, a new browser window will pop up and you'll leave our web area.

  1. Center for International Education has immigration information for F-1 students, J-1 students, J-1 scholars, etc.
  2. Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Chicago
    For example,
    • When are you supposed to renew your passport according to its expiration date?
    • How to renew your passport?
    • How to re-apply for a new passport in case of the loss of your old one?
    • How to obtain notarization or authentication on marriage, birthday, identification, and so on?
    • How to apply Hongkong VISA if you plan to temporarily stay in Hongkong when you go back to China?
    • ......
  3. The American Embassy in China with links to the American Consulates in China
    For example,
    • How to make an appointment for interview?
    • How much is the application fee, and how to pay it?
    • How to renew your VISA?
    • ......

Most of you never heard of credit reports before coming to the US. And with more and more ID theft crimes targeting international students, these materials will be very helpful to you.
