Our Mission Statement
The mission of the Black Student Union is to support
UW-Milwaukee students with a targeted focus on students
of African descent academically, socially and culturally, through programming and networking.
Our Commitment
The Black Student Union is committed to creating a
nurturing environment for students of African descent
on the UW-Milwaukee campus. BSU aims to create a positive
cultural presence on campus that will provide role models
for fellow African-American students in the University,
as well as in the City of Milwaukee community.
Our Objectives
- Provide a support system to all African American students in the UWM campus and community
- Provide public service throughout the university, as well as the City of Milwaukee community
- Provide cultural programming to the UWM community
- Provide the UWM community with a better understanding of African-American culture through enhanced educational programs and services
History
Black Student Union at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was re-established
in November of 2001, but has held a powerful presence on the UW-Milwaukee campus
since 1968. BSU became an officially incorporated non-profit organization of
the State of Wisconsin in 2005. For over 37 years, BSU has addressed the needs
of African American students, provided service to the Black community, maintained
a positive environment for a both new and returning UW-Milwaukee students,
and has worked with other organizations to open doors for society.
