Paris Program to be announced
Program Begins: Departure Date: Return Date:
The city of Paris provides a paradigmatic setting for the study of architecture and urbanism as products of the intersection of historical, cultural and geopolitical forces. The study abroad itinerary consists of 6 weeks of living and working in the heart of Paris, with excursions to London, the World War II beaches in Normandy, La Tourette and Ronchamp. Students will visit numerous architectural sites of both historical and contemporary significance, some off the beaten track, and many inaccessible to the general touring public. Experienced faculty experts provide structured, insightful commentary and directed coursework throughout.
FACULTY
CURRICULUM ARCH 534: Field Study: Urban Form & Structure (3 credits) ARCH 391/791: Independent Studies in Architecture (3 credits)
ARCH 534: Urban Form and Structure consists of on-site studies of buildings, landscapes and urban environments in and around Paris. The intent of the course is to gain understanding of the urban form of Paris as a product of architectural, legislative, geopolitical, social and economic forces. The course includes readings in the history of architecture in Paris, site visits and walking tours. Students work on team assignments which may include analytical drawing and other forms of visualization. It is supported by readings, faculty lectures and informal discussions.
ARCH 392/792: Independent Studies consists of independently-designed short-term research projects. Students are encouraged to engage their particular interests and skills. Past projects have included research papers, photographic essays, architectural design exercises, drawing, video and creative writing. Projects will be discussed with, and authorized by the faculty prior to departure. They can be completed after our return utilizing the full resources of the university.
Students earn 6 credits toward the undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies degree or the graduate Master of Architecture degree at UWM. The credits may be transferred to other courses of study and institutions.
ELIGIBILITY The program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students in architecture and related disciplines. Prior coursework in art and architectural history, and/or French intellectual, social or political history will be beneficial. It is preferred that UWM architecture students have Level II standing (architecture majors) and have taken ARCH 300: Architectural History and Composition., or an equivalent course. Some analytical drawing and graphic diagramming is included in the coursework. However, it does not require advanced art or architectural training. The faculty welcomes motivated students from related disciplines. We value a diversity of perceptual frameworks, knowledge sets, and skills.
LODGING Housing in student apartments is included in the program. The housing is located in the heart of Paris in a vibrant and safe neighborhood with all the amenities of urban life, including cafes, markets, and easy access to public transportation. The program fee is based on double occupancy, but students may request single rooms for a premium. Overnight stays outside of Paris are in two -star rated hotels.
RESOURCES Students also have available to them the resources of our tour partners, ACCENT International. The ACCENT staff is friendly, knowledgeable and fully bi-lingual. They sponsor group cultural and recreational outings and maintain listings of English-speaking service professionals throughout the region, including doctors, dentists, and pharmacies. The Parisian and London offices of ACCENT include computer terminals, a library, and classrooms. They provide a central mail and communications center for our students and other student groups from universities in North America.
