The School of Architecture and Urban Planning is housed in a newly constructed building on the corner of Hartford and Maryland Avenues. This modern four-story brick and glass building was designed by the Chicago architectural firm Holabird and Root, in association with Epstein Uhen, a Milwaukee firm. With approximately 123,000 square feet or double the square footage of the former building, the UWM facility is one of the largest schools of Architecture and Urban Planning built in the past forty years in the United States.
The school boasts some of the best computing facilities on the UWM campus. Three computing labs and several computer-based studios offer students, faculty and staff access to over 100 workstations and to a wide range of software packages including Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and the typical office applications. Laser printing, large-scale plotting, CD-ROM recording and tape backup are also available. Beyond unlimited access to the Internet and the World Wide Web, SARUP maintains a comprehensive Web site for access to course information, faculty/staff data and a wealth of other resources. Students can also create their own Web 'home pages' and link them to the SARUP home page to publish their credentials, works and portfolios on the Web. The heart of the school's computing environment is the building-wide local area network (LAN), with access from studios, lecture halls or exhibition areas simply a matter of "plug and play." Photocopying machines are also accessible by students within the School. The Media Center contains photocopying machines and an extensive photography studio and laboratory. Both of these centers are staffed by professionals and supplemented by student workers. The Reading Room contains a collection of basic reference materials and the major professional journals.
The School of Architecture and Urban Planning has been designated a Center of Excellence within the University of Wisconsin System and, as such, has received funding for visiting faculty. The Center for Architecture and Urban Planning Research has its own equipment, resources and work space for funded research and non-funded faculty-student collaborative research. Facilities are available for graduate students, including individual work spaces, semi-private office space for those students also holding teaching appointments, and access to other spaces needed for research.
