Institute on Environmental Quality in Architecture Jim Wasley and Mike Utzinger's work related to green architecture and building ecology, respectively, received a number of grants from the residential, commercial and renewable Focus on Energy programs and was recognized in a number of ways by the broader professional community over the past year. As a result of their success, they were able to receive official campus approval to establish the Institute for Environmental Quality in Architecture. Utzinger, who specializes in building ecology and serves on the Wisconsin Energy Building Code Collaborative, continues to serve as the Schlitz Audubon Center’s energy-efficiency consultant, working with funding from We Energies and Focus on Energy to monitor the photo-voltaic system installed in the building and expand the educational component of the program. There have been many articles about the building of the Center and Utzinger's work in local papers. Go to UWM News to see one of the most recent reports. Wasley continues as president of the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance, which is now an Affiliate of the United States Green Building Council. As a step towards its immediate objective of the adoption of the LEED rating system as a project requirement for state buildings, WGBA completed a second edition of a resource directory for green building products in Wisconsin. As co-Director of the Institute and WGBA President, he hosted a highly successful UW system-wide green campus symposium for faculty, administrators, and facilities staff in conjunction with the April 2003 WGBA Conference. This meeting, in addition to resulting in consultation projects for the EQA Institute on campuses including UWM, Steven’s Point, Madison, and Milwaukee School of Engineering, resulted in a commitment by the participants to hold future workshops. One was held at UW-Parkside this fall and another is planned for this spring at UW Madison.
