Architectural design entries submitted by students in the School of
Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee garnered four of the five prizes awarded for submissions
to the Precast Concrete Institute’s 2007 Student Design Competition in a
blind review by professionals of the student work. Complete results are
available at :

Thirty-four projects were submitted nationally from several schools of
architecture and engineering to this year's competition. Students from
the various schools completed more projects, but each program was requested
to conduct an internal selection process to assure that only the best
projects were submitted for final judging.
The jury included three professionals in the field of architectural design
with precast concrete design. The group of jurors encompassed additional
expertise in the fields of sustainable design, landscape architecture, and
planning, all with extensive experience in adjudicating architectural design
competitions. The jurors were:
Thomas B. Battles, AIA, Chicago
(PCI Emeritus and Past President; previously architect with Skidmore, Owings
and Merrill, Architects, Chicago; Holabird and Root, Architects,
Chicago; Anderson & Battles, Architects, Chicago)
Greg Cook, AIA, Chicago
(Principal, Holabird & Root, Architects, Chicago)
Robert Davidson, AIA
(Architectural Department Manager, Austin AECOM, Chicago -- a national
design build firm)

This year's PCI Total Precast Design Challenge was the design for a new PCI
headquarters. The design was intended to address the vision that PCI has for
itself. In addition to showcasing a total precast concrete solution (defined
as 100% of structural and architectural elements), a 100% precast concrete
parking structure was also incorporated into the design requirements.
New to this year's competition was the consideration of sustainable building
practices. The potential for precast/prestressed concrete as a
green building material is significant, and successful entries incorporated
the use of precast/prestressed concrete as an agent in sustainable design. A
minimum potential Silver LEED rating was required of all designs.
