The Marcus Prize Winner - 2007
The The School of Architecture & Urban Planning The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee School of Architecture & Urban Planning and the Marcus Corporation Foundation are delighted to announce the recipient of the second Marcus Prize, an architectural award offered every two years to recognize architects `on a trajectory to greatness.’ According to Robert Greenstreet, Dean of the School of Architecture & Urban Planning, "Our goal for this competition is to bring recognition to the emerging voices of excellence in architecture. The Marcus family is a great advocate for the built environment and this award is conceived to build architectural excitement both in Milwaukee and around the world." Those nominated for the award were required to demonstrate at least 10 years of proven, exceptional practice.
On April 27, 2007, a five−person jury convened in Milwaukee to select one recipient among 26 international nominees. The jurors: Ralph Johnson, FAIA, National Design Director, Perkins & Will, Chicago; Hugh Pearman, Editor, RIBA Journal, London; Susan Szenasy, Editor−in−Chief, Metropolis Magazine; Robert Greenstreet, Dean, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture & Urban Planning; and Steven Marcus, CEO, the Marcus Corporation Foundation, reviewed the portfolios, CVs and work statements of each nominee. After a day of deliberation, the jury narrowed their selection to Barkow Leibinger Architects, Berlin. In 1993 Frank Barkow and Regine Leibinger formed their German−American office in Berlin, Germany. Their approach to architecture is formed by the continuous interaction of practice, research and teaching. Projects range from cultural to industrial. According to the jury, "'Barkow Leibinger Architects' ability to seamlessly combine the beauty of craft, environmental excellence, and technological invention made them a standout from the exceptional body of work reviewed today."

During the spring 2008 semester, Frank Barkow and Regine Leibinger will make scheduled visits to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Architecture & Urban Planning, leading a graduate studio dealing with specific challenges in architecture that will have enduring benefits to Milwaukee’s urban fabric. They will also be invited to participate in public workshops and lectures.
In a recent article, England’s Building Design called the Marcus Prize the world’s most lucrative prize competition for young architects, matched only by the Pritzker Prize for more well established architects in terms of financial reward.
The winners assembled an impressive submission to the jury. According to Frank Barkow "There was a fantastic amount of work involved, but we were able to put the time into it because it is such a prestigious prize."
"The Marcus Prize is a part of our ongoing commitment to support the growth and development of Milwaukee," says Steve Marcus, CEO of the Marcus Corporation and a director of the Marcus Corporation Foundation, adding that excellence in design has a large impact on the reputation of the city.
The Marcus Corporation Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Marcus Corporation, a lodging and entertainment company headquartered in Milwaukee.
